What actually happens at daycare

Dog running across the play yard at Kennel Club Boarding daycare in Ottawa

Morning (7:00–8:45 weekdays)

Your dog goes to their own enclosure while we sort the day's groups. We match dogs by energy level and play style — never at random — and then they head out to their playgroup.

The day

Groups are outside as long as the weather allows, with staff in the yard the whole time. Every play area has shade, fresh water, and pools in summer. When the weather turns, we rotate groups inside: every enclosure has a covered outdoor section, and the indoor playroom is there for rainy days, seniors, and dogs who prefer things calmer.

Midday rest

Every dog gets a break in their own private enclosure — 5 by 8 feet inside, with a covered outdoor run of 5 by 12 feet. Most settle straight away after a busy morning. Rest is part of every day, not something we do only when a dog looks tired.

Afternoon

Back out with the group until pick-up.

Evening (4:00–5:45 weekdays)

At pick-up we'll tell you how the day went — who they played with, how they settled, anything worth knowing.

Drop-off and pick-up both happen during our two daily windows — either window works for either one. Weekdays: 7:00–8:45 AM and 4:00–5:45 PM. Weekends and holidays: 8:00–8:45 AM and 5:00–5:45 PM. Please arrive inside a drop-off / pick-up window; the doors are locked at other times because staff are out with the dogs. Full hours and pick-up details.

Nothing falls through the cracks

We built our own tracking system for this. Feeding, medications, which dogs yours likes, anything you tell us at drop-off — it's logged, every staff member sees it, and the key points are also written on your dog's enclosure door, so anyone walking past sees them.

Daycare suits social dogs. The trial day tells us if that's your dog.

Daycare is group play, so it's for dogs who are comfortable around other dogs and have energy to burn. It isn't the right fit for every dog — and we'd rather find that out on day one than three weeks in.

That's why every new dog starts with a trial day. On a trial day, one staff member is assigned to your dog for the whole day and introduces them to the group one step at a time: one dog first, then two, then the playgroup, at whatever pace your dog sets. At pick-up we tell you plainly what we saw and whether daycare is the right fit. If it isn't, we'll say so and talk through alternatives — including boarding, where the environment is different.

Two kinds of daycare day

Plays well with other dogs — full standard care, group play matched by energy and play style, indoor and outdoor time, rest breaks.

Special care required — the same standard of care in a calmer environment: seniors, dogs on medication, dogs who prefer a quieter day. Same supervision, smaller world.

Who looks after your dog

Puppies playing together at Kennel Club Boarding dog daycare

Patrick and Chandra own Kennel Club Boarding and are at the kennel every day. This isn't a facility run by rotating staff — the people watching your dog's group are people we trained and work alongside.

Everyone on the team has completed the Dogsafe Canine First Aid course, and we keep dog-specific first aid kits across the kennel and property. We keep hypoallergenic gastrointestinal food on hand in case a dog gets an upset stomach, and we always call you (or your emergency contact) before giving first aid or changing food — you stay in control of what happens to your dog.

New here? How to get started

Three steps, about ten minutes:

  1. Create an account on the site.
  2. Complete the registration form for each dog — vaccination records (Rabies, Distemper/DAPP, Bordetella), medical notes, how they are with other dogs. Once, and it's on file for every booking after.
  3. Book the trial day.

Our new daycare customer page walks through each step, including what the vaccination record needs to show.

Questions people ask before their first day

How much does dog daycare cost in Ottawa?

See the table above — $35 a day for a social dog, $50 for special care, with multi-dog rates and packages that bring it lower for regulars.

What do dogs do at daycare?

Group play outside for as long as the weather allows, with rest breaks in their own enclosure and time in the indoor playroom when it's wet, hot or cold. Staff are with the groups all day.

Is daycare good for my dog?

For social, energetic dogs, yes — it's exercise, company and stimulation that's hard to give a dog who's home alone all day. It isn't right for every dog, which is why every new dog does a trial day first.

Do dogs nap during daycare?

Yes. Every dog gets a midday break in their own private enclosure, and most take it gladly.

Are dogs outside when it's raining, snowing, hot or cold?

We rotate groups inside in bad weather. Every enclosure has a covered outdoor section and the indoor playroom is heated and cooled.

Do you take dogs that need special care?

Yes — seniors, dogs on medication, dogs who need a quieter day. Special-care daycare is $50 a day.

What are drop-off and pick-up times?

Two windows a day, and you can drop off or pick up in either. Weekdays 7:00–8:45 AM and 4:00–5:45 PM; weekends and holidays 8:00–8:45 AM and 5:00–5:45 PM.

Where are you?

5673 Fourth Line Road, Ottawa (North Gower), just off Highway 416. About five minutes from Manotick, Kars and Richmond, ten from Barrhaven and Nepean.
