Introduction
Running a successful kennel or pet daycare is no small feat! It requires not only a deep love for animals but also a well-trained and dedicated staff. According to a recent study by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association, over 60% of pet parents consider their pets as family members. This highlights the importance of providing exceptional care and service. In this post, we will explore how kennels train their staff to ensure top-notch animal care and customer satisfaction.
The Importance of Staff Training in Kennels
Training staff is crucial for the success of any pet care business. A well-trained staff member can make all the difference in creating a safe and nurturing environment for animals. Business owners must invest time and resources into developing a comprehensive staff training program. This not only benefits the pets but also enhances the overall customer experience. A trained staff member can effectively handle various situations, from managing a lively dog daycare to providing comfort to anxious pets.
Creating a Comprehensive Staff Training Program
Developing a robust staff training program is the first step towards running a successful kennel. The program should cover a wide range of topics, from basic animal care to advanced emergency procedures. It is essential to tailor the training to the specific needs of the business. For example, a dog daycare and boarding facility may require additional training on managing large groups of dogs and ensuring their safety. The training program should also include hands-on practice sessions to reinforce learning. This allows staff members to gain confidence and competence in their roles.
Focusing on Customer Service
Exceptional customer service is the cornerstone of any successful business. In the world of pet care, it is even more critical. Pet parents want to feel confident that their furry friends are in good hands. Training staff to provide top-notch customer service is essential. This includes being friendly, approachable, and knowledgeable. Staff members should be able to answer any questions pet parents may have and address their concerns promptly. A positive interaction with staff can leave a lasting impression and build long-term customer loyalty.
Ensuring a Positive Working Environment
A positive working environment is vital for staff morale and productivity. Business owners should focus on creating a supportive and inclusive workplace. This can be achieved by fostering open communication, recognizing achievements, and providing opportunities for growth. A happy staff member is more likely to provide better care for the animals and deliver excellent customer service. Additionally, a positive working environment can reduce staff turnover and attract top talent.
Mastering Body Language
Body language plays a significant role in animal care. Animals are highly perceptive and can sense emotions through non-verbal cues. Training staff to understand and use positive body language can help create a calm and stress-free environment for the pets. For example, using open and relaxed body posture can make animals feel more at ease. Staff members should also learn to read the body language of animals to detect any signs of discomfort or distress. This can help in addressing issues promptly and preventing potential problems.
Specialized Training for Pet Daycares and Boarding Facilities
Pet daycares and boarding facilities have unique challenges and requirements. Staff members need specialized training to handle these situations effectively. For instance, managing a busy dog daycare requires skills in group management, conflict resolution, and ensuring the safety of all animals. Training should also cover topics such as creating a stimulating environment for the pets and maintaining a clean and hygienic space. Business owners can refer to resources like the Canadian Kennel Club for guidelines and best practices in running a successful pet daycare and boarding facility.
Preventing the Spread of Disease
Preventing the spread of disease is a top priority in any pet care business. Staff members should be trained in proper hygiene practices and protocols to minimize the risk of infection. This includes regular cleaning and disinfection of the facility, as well as proper handling of food and water. Training should also cover recognizing signs of illness in animals and taking appropriate actions. By maintaining a clean and healthy environment, kennels can ensure the well-being of all pets in their care.
Continuous Learning and Development
Training should not be a one-time event. Continuous learning and development are essential for staff members to stay updated on the latest trends and best practices in animal care. Business owners can provide regular training sessions, workshops, and access to online resources. Encouraging staff to pursue further education and certifications can also enhance their skills and knowledge. The Canadian Animal Health Institute offers valuable resources and training programs for pet care professionals.
Conclusion
Training staff is a critical aspect of running a successful kennel or pet daycare. By investing in comprehensive training programs, business owners can ensure that their staff members are well-equipped to provide exceptional animal care and customer service. Creating a positive working environment, focusing on customer service, and mastering body language are key components of effective staff training. Additionally, specialized training for pet daycares and boarding facilities, as well as continuous learning and development, can help staff stay updated and provide the best possible care for the pets. With a well-trained and dedicated staff, kennels can create a safe, nurturing, and welcoming environment for both pets and their parents.
How we train ours
At Kennel Club Boarding, everyone on the team completes the Dogsafe Canine First Aid course, then learns the kennel the way the dogs experience it: how groups are matched, how a dog is moved through the play areas without crossing paths with dogs it shouldn't meet, how to read a dog that has had enough, and how the tracking system and enclosure-door notes keep feeding, medication and preferences in front of whoever is with the dog. Patrick and Chandra are at the kennel every day and work alongside the staff they train.
